Last night was the Jax Shoot Club’s monthly meetup and it was crazy! (in a fantastically chaotic way-what else should you expect with 80 photogs on Hershel’s strip?) I had a great time working with great models in great light and beautiful weather. It was a snappers dream – shooting at sunset on what sure felt like the first day of Fall.
I met some great people and learned some cool stuff to boot! Next investment is a pocket wizard for this girl and a shootsac for projects like these… Christmas is coming right?!
Here is a handful that I had to work on today-it took all I had not to do all this last night.

Vintage Emily and the bugs…
22 09 2009Emily is an awesome girl who modeled for me in a pinch. What a trooper!! Don’t let the grace and poise she portrays fool you. It was hot and buggy out! She made some beautiful images that were exactly what I wanted. And I loved her look. She was made to be in these shots. She really embodied what the models back in the day had- beauty and curves. Throw in the natural settings and the fabrics- successful shoot. (not counting the bug bites!)

Haute Momma Portraits
20 07 2009My idea of sitting for portriats because it’s just plain fun did not take long to try out with someone. JM brought along her son and posed for some truly beautiful shots alone and with him. I love the idea of women as mothers embracing the glamour we often have to throw aside. As she told him when he asked what we were doing- “We’re playing dress up! Mommies like to play too ya know”. He shrugged, hopped down from her lap and gave us a look like “duh, who wouldn’t want to play”.
I think the results of these types of sessions are really unique because the person sitting for the portrait doesn’t have a specific end product in mind so I really get to shape the look and feel of the shoot. Plus it really is a chance for -in this case- a really awesome mom to step outside the box and into some glamour! Check out a sneak peek of what we shot!

Holly By Golly, this was great!
16 07 2009So a friend recently mentioned she could not wait to need a reason to have me photograph her.
I replied…
“You Don’t Need a Reason-all you need is the desire to have fun and look beautiful!”
This is where my job really gets fun! I adore doing comissioned portraits for clients who want to mark a milestone in their life but who says these can be the only times?!
Why should Seniors, Brides and Babies have all the fun, RIGHT?!
Perfect example…earlier this week I worked with my cousin and muse, Holly. We had no real goal in mind just the desire to have fun and see what happens. I think this is a perfect time to really let go and channel your inner cover model. Pick out ideas and costumes you might not think twice about and go for it. I love just looking through the fashion mags and seeing what they put out. Why can’t you do that? Its a perfect time to grab your girlfriends, a bottle of wine and get together and channel your inner diva- just for yourself. The best part is a true piece of beauty can come out of it and all you were there for was to have a little fun!

Mama Mia!
22 02 2009I have noticed with each new client, I get to try something new, maybe go a little outside of my comfort zone. It was hard to believe but when Kadie asked me to take her maternity portraits outside, I realized I am always shooting in studio. So I was hyped and nervous all at the same time.
Its one thing to shoot outdoors for yourself but I had gotten spoiled by controling the environment for too long with strobes. So this was acutually about 2 months ago but we both had so much scheduled that I didn’t see her again until after Jonathan arrived and it was time for his first portraits.
She got to experience some more firsts with me. I recently invested in some new props/furniture to add a little variety and elegance to these shots.
I like the idea of doing my norm of closeups and such but I have been drawn to the idea of really pulling back and seeing this tiny thing in their huge new world. Establishing that idea of size and space really puts into perspective how delicate and special each little one is.
On that note, ALWAYS remember that a newborn runs the show!!!! No matter how much you plan and how much you bring with you, if that little one doesn’t want to, good luck to you. I actually did shots over a period of 2 days. Jonathan was a bit over a week so I had prepared myself for it to be either really smooth or crazy so I was ok. Mom on the other hand was worried that it wasn’t going to work out. Just remember, moms have alot to worry about and do your best to get what you need and don’t let them stress. I love Anne Geddes (got to meet her in Phoenix-whoohoo!!) but every mom thinks it is going to be this quiet little wonderland of a time where the baby is a doll that you can make do anything. I got to see how Anne has set up her studio and the time it takes to get that one series of images and moms out there would be shocked. When I come to your home I doubt with hormones going crazy you are going to want to keep it at 85 degrees. I figure I will try to get the basics in first and then try any new stuff either I brought along or the moms have come up with.
Kadie and Jonathan were so great.
I am posting some of the shots of peace as well as funny takes on what has become a pretty commomn shot photogs get of newborns. Combined with the lighting (which was my attempt to give it alittle flair from the usual shots) the state Jonathan is in made it priceless! I like that this shot was not too cookie cutter.
And then there are the ones we all agreed were what our goal was to capture. (Both Kadie and I didn’t even remember the moments of calm on the bench.)

So V-Day is over and I survived!!
21 02 2009So the day has passed and the kickoff into my boudoir pinup portraits was awesome! No.5 Studios is officially on the map! Not without a few hitches (never trust a lab to be on time or deadon with the order if you have a tight deadline) but still great none-the-less. I even have four parties in the works from this one and one who wasn’t even there.
I discovered the reason these parties can be so much fun- girls never outgrow dressing up and looking pretty. It was great shooting all the girls who showed up and they really gave me tons of styles to capture. No one session was ever the same. I am posting some shots from that night and 2 that were the inspiration for getting these started. Jennie Melissa’s shots got everybody excited and wanted to look fabulous.
I did learn that any holiday oriented shoots will always have to be scheduled a month before-see above reference to labs. I am already making improvements and changes to help streamline the process so everyone gets plentyof options in the least amount of work (for me and the women taking part). The best thing to let the subject know is to think of a theme before hand- it will really help them and you figure out what shots to go for and costuming. Thanks to Chavonne for her brilliant costume/clothing investments- Her book really rocked it. Also, if this is not only for the subject herself but someone special, get them to bring anything the intended receiver may like or own. Uniforms, Crisp white business shirts and ties, sports jerseys, the choices are endless but the guys love ‘em!
I picked out some stuff just to show how much fun we had and the different styles I captured in just one night. Whether they had done something like this before or needed tons of direction all looked beautiful! Thanks girls for a great shoot!

Some happy valentines are in the future!
5 02 2009So this weekend marked no. 5 studios official debut and it rocked! Our “Valentease” party was so successful that we already have 4 more parties in the works! And they say the first of the year is the scary time for photogs! What a way to kick off my business.
I do want to say thanks to very special people in my life and studio without which none of this would be possible-(my homage to the oscars btw:) -
Greg who has supported me since that first class and everday after. To my volunteer assistant who also happens to be my mom! Of course to my sister by association-JM- this economy needs to get on the up and up so you can officially be my partner. You are the right brain to my left. And my learning tree gals-you got this no5 going!
So anyway I’m not sure if this is what a blog should be for but I felt of was necessary.
As soon as I get the proofs actioned and spit shined (haha) a few sneak peeks will be posted. I hope all the girls that had sessions had as much fun as I did!
Keep checking in to see what’s next…
I have a maternity and newborn session I am just finishing up too so those might make it up here too.
